Fishing Vessel Decommissioning. In the 70's and 80's fishing vessels that were to be decommissioned were stripped of their gear and sold. Their owners were paid a premium by the government to stop fishing and were allowed to sell the boat so long as it was not for fishing. Many went to Ireland and some years later one or two appeared back under different names and went back to fishing, unbeknown to the owners that they had been decommissioned. This led to the original owners ending up in trouble with the government. The next stage in the decommissionoing saga saw the need for the boats to be destroyed when the decommissioning payment was made. Many fine boats were broken up. Some owners of older boats, determined to stay in fishing, are still building new or buying second hand, bigger boats and transferring their licence from the existing boat. This allows their older boat to be sold for conversion. Many of these Scottish or Irish built boats are now coming on the market. The vessels over 50 feet make excellent conversions as they will have full headroom below decks. Some even smaller boats, depending on where they were built, will also have headroom. Add the possibility of finding one with a Gardner engine and an aft crew cabin and the possibility of a very reasonably priced family cruiser with classic fishing boat lines, becomes a reality.
